The Cathay Institute of Cardiovascular Medicine (CICVM) is to gather cardiovascular specialists from departments of surgery, medicine and pediatrics to effectively ultilize resources inside and outside of the Cathay General Hospital for purposes of promoting the standards of medical practice and for advancing educational as well as research programs. Depending on interest and specialty, various teams are designated to manage patients with coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathy, valvular dysfunction, rhythm disturbance, vascular disease and congenital heart disease. Aside from operating room, recovery room and cardiac catheterization laboratories, there are well equipped intensive care unit and laboratories for echocardiography, nuclear medicine and cardiac electrophysiology. The research work is aimed at preventive medicine and development of advanced treatment modalities in collobration with the Cathay Medical Research Institute (CMRI) located at Hsichih.
The Cathay Institute of Neurological Medicine (CINM) is a coordinated multidisciplinary team, include neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, pediatric neurologists, neurooncologists, for the investigation and treatments of Brain and Spinal cord disorders.
Our fields of interest include CNS trauma, tumors, infections, aneurysms and AVMs, stroke, epilepsy, hydrocephalus, movement disorders, Parkinson's disease, inherited neurological disorders, peripheral nerve, pain, spinal disorder, trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm.
Our goal is to bring scientific researches and discovery into clinical services to improve the quality of management of our patients. The basic studies of our team are cooperated with that of the Cathay Medical Research Institute (CMRI) located at Hsichih.
Gynecologic Oncology Center not only provides detailed information on women's health care, it also organizes educational programs on preventive medicine and offers standard techniques of evaluation for the diagnosis and treatment of premalignant and malignant gynecologic lesions.
To ensure a complete range of health care strategies and follow-up evaluation, we have professional gynecologic oncology nurse clinican and research assistant in the field of chemotherapy. While it is essential for us to focus on academic study, to participate in multi-center clinical trials with National Health Research Institution, we fully understand the general health care needs of women and thus serve as a tertiary delivery system for the community-based health clinics..
The Assisted Reproductive Unit provides both evaluational and therapeutic services, such as semen analysis, antisperm antibody test, folliculometry, hormonal assay, intrauterine insemination, in-vitro fertilization, embryo culture, sperm and embryo freezing.
In addition, animal experimental (mouse embryo) culture and air culture are performed periodically for quality control.
The laboratory of prenatal diagnosis at Cathay General Hospital provides services of routine chromosome culture from blood, amniotic fluid, chorionic villi and fetal tissue.
Besides the routine chromosome analysis, high resolution banding technique and fluorescent in situ hybridization are also available for locating the specific chromosome abnormalities.
In Down syndrome screening program, two options are available for pregnant women---the conventional maternal biochemical screening in second-trimester(14-22 weeks of gestation) and the advanced "combined test" with detection rate of as high as 89%, which introduces the sonographic fetal nuchal translucency measurement and the maternal serum level of pregnancy associated plasma protein-A in first-trimester (10-13 weeks of gestation).
This laboratory is led by Dr. Mingsong Tsai, who is an experienced expert in this field.

In October 1998, the department introduced the Varian (Clinac 2100 C/D) dual energy linear accelerator and Nucletron Plato computer medical system, two of the newest equipments in Europe and America. The Plato computer system can outline the shape of the tumors and the structures of the surrounding organs, thus delineate the area of treatment more accurately and prevent injury to normal tissue. The accuracy of three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy gives higher dosage to the tumor volume and reduces damage to normal tissue; thus can produce better control of the disease but also reduce side effects. Moreover, Nucletron mHDR remote afterloading system was introduced for intracavitary and interstitial brachytherapy. Using Ir-192 and digital control, high accuracy and safety make cancer treatment more complete. The department provides a comfortable space and humane treatment processes.
With best positioning, least error, higher dosage and less side effects, convenient and accurate treatments which are more timesaving are provided.
